13 Hours – The Inside Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi

13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi is a 2014 historical action book by American author Mitchell Zuckoff.

What happened at Benghazi?

13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi attempts to tell the truth about the terrorist attack by Islamist militants at the American diplomatic compound (US State Department Special Mission Compound) and the CIA station (called the Annex) in Benghazi, Libya.  The Benghazi attack occurred on September 11, 2012, the 9/11 anniversary.

The book is from the point of view of the compounds' defenders.  They were a group of six (6) Global Response Staff (GRS) operators, private security contractors for the CIA. It only tells the reader what happened during those 13 hours. The book did not discuss the political controversy surrounding the attacks. The book did not mention Hilary Clinton's role in the Benghazi attacks.   It was later adapted into a feature film directed by Michael Bay in 2016.

Who died at Benghazi?

13 Hours tells the story of the heroism of the GRS operators. Their attempt to rescue the USA ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and U.S. Foreign Service Information Management Officer Sean Smith. They both died in the attack. The terrorists continued their attack on the CIA station a few hours later. Two additional US citizens Glen Doherty and Tyrone S. Woods were killed.  Many others were wounded. An unknown number of Libyan perpetrators, suspected to be affiliated with numerous groups,  also died in the attack.

This story about patriotism, bravery and duty is a must read and highly recommended.

If you are too lazy to read the book, the MOVIE version entitled 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi is available HERE.  The movie version does a good job of recounting the September 11, 2012 attack.  It more or less follows the book in the sense that it only deals with the attacks, the realities of combat and the heroism of the GRS staff.  The politics surrounding the event were not prominent in the movie, the emphasis was on the action.
